Columba (genus)

Dove (Columba oenas )

The field pigeons (Columba ) are a species-rich genus of Doves ( Columbidae ) and include within this species-rich family to the subfamily of Columbinae. They are prevalent in the Old World. Genetic analysis of Kevin P. Johnson et al. suggests, to lead the New World species that behave as a sister group to Streptoplia as a separate genus under the name of American field pigeons Patagioenas. There are mainly arboreal, although most species occasionally come to feed on the ground.

Appearance feature

Field Pigeons are medium to large birds. The typical field pigeon has the size of a city or wood pigeon. Waldbewohnende species generally have shorter wings and longer tails. In the forest-dwelling wood pigeon in adolescence the characteristics of pigeons open landscapes are still available: The wings are longer and the tail is short in comparison. Typical are blue, gray and brown plumage tones. Many species have conspicuous spots in the neck area. They differ from the turtledoves, by its size, longer tail and legs, which are feathered in the front top.

Reproduction

Most species live in pairs. Both parents feed the young birds, which are altricial. The nest consists usually of two eggs. However, some species have nests with one egg. The European species change their small and large feathers after they have become independent.
