Comas District, Lima

Comas is a district of the Lima Province in Peru. Located north of Lima, Comas is one of the most densely populated settlements in Peru. Urban planning Comas is classified as Informal settlement. The current Mayor of Comas is Nicolás Kusunoki (since 2011).

Geography

Comas has a size of 48.75 km ². The Town Hall is 140 meters above sea level. In the north there is the district Carabayllo, east of San Juan de Lurigancho, bounded to the south of Independencia and to the west of Puente Piedra and Los Olivos.

Demographics, History and Social

According to an estimate from 2002 Comas has 496,000 inhabitants. This gives a population density of 10,176 inhabitants per square kilometer. In 1999 there were 85 845 households in Comas.

During the first years of its history Comas was a pueblo joven. The previously virtually uninhabited " Pampa de Comas " was settled by the immigration of immigrants from the Peruvian highlands in the 1960s.

Comas is one of the poorer districts of Lima. According to a BBC documentary, the former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham a long time lived in the district of Lomas de Carabayllo of Comas, to see how collected donations will be used for a sports project.
