Commune II (Niamey)

Niamey II is one of five arrondissements of Niger's capital, Niamey. Niamey II has 165,075 inhabitants ( 2001).

Geography

Niamey II is located on the left bank of the River Niger between the arrondissements of Niamey Niamey I and III. In the south of Niamey II is the Nigerien National Museum was opened in 1959.

History

Niamey II is in its current area extent since 1996. The city of Niamey in 1984 divided into five districts. In 1989, the 1st and the 2nd district to a municipality: together within Niamey (French commune urbaine ). This township was named Niamey I and until 1996 comprised the territory of the present arrondissements II Niamey, Niamey I and a part of today's arrondissements Niamey III. 2010, the municipalities Niamey were converted into arrondissements.
