Like other ERP systems can Compiere without immense programming effort, be adapted to the individual needs of the user. The adjustments can be made within the Compiere Client also by the user.

Compiere is multi-lingual, multi-currency and multi-client capable.

Compiere stands out from other products by the effect that it stores all the business partners in a data structure. In the classical distinction and separate storage of suppliers, customers, prospects and marketing addresses has been omitted in favor of the benefit to replace the customer management through a business partner management. Traditional CRM systems focus only customers. For a company this functionality but is essential for customers, suppliers and prospects. Because of this extended functionality you would have the CRM module of Compiere actually call business partner management.

Compiere can be used currently to PostgreSQL, Postgres Plus Advanced Server and several Oracle database systems. The versions for PostgreSQL and Oracle XE is freely available and is sufficient for many installations. The Oracle XE version is limited to 4 GB database size and a CPU. The commercial version of the database management system has a number of additional GUI functions or for example pdf export. The databases used for the commercial version of Oracle databases offered by EnterpriseDB Postgres Plus Advanced Server can be used. Versions for databases such as DB2 and MS SQL Server are still pending.

Compiere is offered with a so-called dual license. The user has the choice between the free GPL version or the commercial license, he may acquire under a maintenance contract.

Project spin-offs

There is already a working version for the free database PostgreSQL under the name " Kompiere ". This also includes the extension " Libero Manufacturing" that extends Compiere in the field of production modules. There one on the free database Firebird ( Fyracle ) has already been presented based version.

The ER / Box project has porting Compiere on the free Java database Apache Derby goal since September 2006 and provides first binaries available. In addition, ER / Box also runs on PostgreSQL.

A far more advanced version has been developed in the project ADempiere. As database PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Oracle XE be used. As new modules were Manufacturing ( Libero ), a PoS ( Poste Rita ), added web service ( SOAP) and an optional web client and it is thought to a change in technology. Attaches particular importance to the project on the community involvement in the development process, which was at the same time also the most important spin-off reason.

There is also the project Openbravo, which can be operated with either PostgreSQL or Oracle. In contrast to the Compiere client only runs in the web browser.
