EnterpriseDB

EnterpriseDB is a company based in Bedford, Massachusetts, United States software manufacturers. The company offers complementary software and commercial support to the free object-relational database management system PostgreSQL and programs for migration from other databases to PostgreSQL. In particular, for the migration of Oracle database systems added compatibility tools are offered.

History

Andy Astor and Denis Lussier founded the company in 2004 with the aim to break the database oligopoly. They resolved, using equally powerful to lower open source software based on the costs for businesses by up to 90 %. They chose PostgreSQL because in this database management system, a 20-year development history has been incorporated with a lot of experience with large commercial applications. It also has a large active community of developers. Prior to founding EnterpriseDB there was no year to MySQL AB comparable provider for PostgreSQL databases. Illustra, a company founded by Michael Stonebraker and Gary Morgan Thaler company that also offered support for PostgreSQL, was sold to Informix in 1997.

Today, the company is trying to establish itself as a direct competitor of Oracle. In April 2009, EnterpriseDB and IBM signed an agreement with Oracle compatibility for the IBM DB2 database system using EnterpriseDB technology to make available. The resulting therefrom product is sold by the IBM Netezza subsidiary under the brand name Netezza Migrator.

Another commercial competitor is EMC ² with the PostgreSQL version Greenplum.

  • Postgres Plus Cloud Database provides the ability PostgreSQL or Postgres Plus to use databases as a service to operate and maintain itself without a database server must. The service should be equal to cost the same as the MySQL -based Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS ), and is positioned as a competitor to appropriate services proprietary database vendors.

The administration tools are, inter alia, enhanced versions of pgAdmin.
