Conan the Barbarian

Conan the Cimmerian is a fictional character who sprang originally from the imagination of Robert E. Howard. He is the perfect example of a barbarian: large, disproportionately strong, aggressive, straight forward and no outspoken thinker, a strongman who, though by no means stupid, yet prefers the action itself planning in general.

Conan's world

Conan is born into the imaginary Hyborian Age, attaches for Howard a period around 10,000 BC. This world is similar geographically to ours, have the names of certain similarities. This can probably be explained by the historical interest of Howard. Some editions of the Conan adventures contain maps of Hyboria ( in the German editions were they refined by Erhard Ringer and equipped with more details).

Historical

Howard's first Conan story The Phoenix on the Sword was in December 1932 printed in Weird Tales magazine.

Importance

Conan is probably the most famous barbarian hero of the fantasy. Howard's presentation in the description of his hero delivered many authors to develop their own barbarians. Conan was often parodied, for example, by Pratchett with his aging hero Cohen the Barbarian. Howard's work has been supplemented by numerous authors with their own stories.

The figure Conan can now be found again in numerous comics, including Marvel Comics or Panini Manga and comic. One output of this publishing house also comes from the character of Red Sonja, which is not found in the novels of the actual series. Conan and Red Sonja also had occasional appearances in the Marvel Comics, where they interacted with the occurring there heroes.

Published in 2004, Mongoose Publishing Conan, a role-playing game with numerous additional supporting documentation. The game is no longer being developed because of license issues since 2009 and is now regarded as sold.
