Confederation of the Greens

The Confederation of the Greens (Spanish Confederación de Los Verdes ) is a 1984 Spanish alliance of political parties. There was a founding member of the European Green Party, but was excluded in May 2012 from this.

History

The Spanish Greens ( Los Verdes ) was founded in 1984 after previously a group of Spanish environmentalists had published the "Manifesto of Tenerife " in the year on the initiative of the German activist Petra Kelly, in which they demanded a change in the social and environmental policies and their distrust of the the existing parties brought to expression. In 1988, the party was a member of the " European Green Alliance", which later became the European Green Party.

After the founding of the various competing ecological Small parties left the party decided its transformation into a regional confederation individual parties at a party congress in Granada in 1995. However, this confederation consisted of only a part of the Spanish parties that call themselves green. There are also, inter alia, founded in 1994, the Los Verdes Grupo Verde ( " Green - Green Group") and the Catalan Iniciativa per Catalunya - Verds ( "Initiative for Catalonia - Greens "), which co-operated but with the Confederation since 2007 is also a member of the European Green Party.

For a long time existed merger efforts between the Confederation and the Grupo Verde to end the fragmentation of the green party spectrum in Spain. However, the efforts of Grupo Verde, to compete for the European elections in Spain in 2009 with a common list failed. The end of 2010 was finally established Equo, an alliance of Green parties that could win a seat in the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2011 and was also included in the European Green Party. 13 of the 16 member parties of the Confederation were still over before the elections to Equo, so that the Confederación only three member parties of: Els Verds del Pais Valencian, Els Verds - Opció Verda and Los Verdes de Madrid. While Equo pursued a course of political independence, the rest of the Confederación tried since early 2012 to develop closer relations with the post-communist Izquierda Unida. In May 2012, the Congress of the European Green Party decided to exclude the Confederación because this only an "empty structure " and was no longer representing the Spanish green spectrum. This exclusion had been requested by the übergetrenenen to Equo former member parties of the Confederation.

Election results

The strong fragmentation of the green spectrum as well as the Spanish electoral system, which favors large parties and so complicates the establishment of new small parties, prevented any significant electoral successes of the Confederation. This led to a change in strategy of the organization that no longer autonomously most elections, but now competes in regional list compounds, such as with the Socialist PSOE or the post-communist Izquierda Unida. However, this strategy is controversial and led to further Parteiabsplitterungen.

Achievements of the Confederation included the catchment in the Spanish parliament with two deputies in the legislature 2004-2008 and in the European Parliament with an MP in the period 2004-2009, in each case in connection with the PSOE list. In the European elections in Spain in 2009, the Confederación joined a coalition with various linksregionalistischen parties, but there was only the fourth list position. The coalition was able to win a seat to rotate according to an agreement between the member parties. At the end of the legislative period 2009-2014 should therefore for six months with Pura Peris a member of the Confederation members of the European Parliament.

Also, by Connections list managed by the Confederation of the catchment into different regional parliaments; in Andalusia, she was involved until March 2008 at the regional government until 2010 in the Balearic Islands. Currently (2012 ), still more represented in any parliament.
