Congrinae

Conger eels ( Congrinae )

The conger eels ( Congrinae ) are a subfamily of conger eels ( congers ), which comprises about 20 genera and 60 species. They live worldwide in tropical and subtropical oceans from shallow waters to the deep sea. Conger eels are mostly nocturnal and live during the day in caves, crevices or burrow ahead with its tail in the sand.

Features

The body shape is eel-like, the body diameter is usually greater than in the river eels. The fin rays of dorsal and anal fin are segmented, well- developed pectoral fins. The posterior nostrils are between the eyes.

Reproduction

The reproductive biology of the fish is largely unknown. Females of the European conger ( Conger conger) lay three to 8 million eggs, which hatch pasture leaf-shaped, free-swimming larvae Leptocephalus.
