Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 29 to 36 millimeters. The color of the forewing upper side varies from gray-brown to reddish brown. Both the inner and the outer transverse line are made of white dots, the wavy line is yellowish white. The lower portion of the kidney defect is filled in white. Ring and pin flaws are small, indistinct and blurred. In specimens of the subspecies Conisania leineri Pomerana the veins are dusted whitish. The rear upper wing surface is colored without markings and pale gray-brown.

Egg

The spherical egg has a strongly flattened base is ribbed strong and has a white color. It shows a ruby binding and a center spot of the same color.

Caterpillar

In the full-grown caterpillars, there are different colors. So they can be brownish in color and show narrow, bright back - and side- back lines or they have a greenish color and broad, whitish side ridge lines and side stripes. The spiracles are black.

Doll

The light brown doll has a compact shape. At the short, conical cremaster there are two long points.

Distribution and habitat

The distribution is patchy in Central Europe. It stretches along the Baltic Sea coast and to the east by the southern Urals. Preferred habitat is open, sandy grasslands and steppe areas.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation a year. Main flight period are the months of May to July. They are mostly nocturnal and visit artificial light sources as well as bait and were sometimes observed in the evening while sucking on the flowers of lilac (Syringa ). As a food plant of the caterpillars live in July and August sagebrush species ( Artemisia ) can be specified. On the Baltic coast field - mugwort (Artemisia campestris ) ssp. sericea preferred. Older caterpillars hide during the day like in the sand. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Endangering

Conisania leineri occurs in Germany only in Mecklenburg -Vorpommern, especially in the back dune area on the island of Usedom, where it was found year as numerous.
