Background

In April 1962, Francis worked mainly in Europe, where she took in the Austrophon Studios in Vienna, among other things some German songs, and at the Italian and French Riviera their outdoor scenes for the movie My ship sails to you (English Original Title: Follow the Boys ) turned.

From April 26 to 28, she lived in Rome, where she recorded thirteen songs for a concept album, which awarded the Academy Award film songs included.

The songs are as follows:

  • All the Way from the movie The Joker is Wild (1957 )
  • Buttons and Bows from the movie The Paleface (1948 )
  • High hopes from the film A Hole in the Head (1959 )
  • Lullaby of Broadway from the film Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935)
  • Over The Rainbow from the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939 )
  • The Last Time I Saw Paris from the film Lady Be Good ( 1941)
  • The Way You Look Tonight from the film Swing Time (1936 )
  • Secret Love from the movie Calamity Jane (1953 )
  • Whatever Will Be, Will Be ( Qué Será, Será ) from the movie The Man Who Knew Too Much ( 1956)
  • When You Wish upon a star from the film Pinocchio (1940 )
  • You'll Never Know from the movie Hello, Frisco, Hello ( 1943)
  • Zip -a -Dee- Dooh - Dah from the film Song of The South (1947 )

The instrumental backing tracks of these songs had already been recorded previously under the direction of Geoff Love at Abbey Road Studios of EMI in London. The corresponding tapes were brought to Rome, where Connie Francis recorded her vocals overdubbed in the RCA Italiana Studios. However, the artist was not happy with the finished result, so that the originally planned for early summer 1962 release of the album was canceled.

The album remained untouched until March 1963. Until then, the song Days of Wine and Roses from the film with the Academy Award was awarded for the Best Original Song in 1962. Under the musical direction of Don Costa Connie Francis recorded her own version of this song and simultaneously attacked the still unreleased album on again. Since the singer was still dissatisfied with the original recordings from 1962, she asked Costa to add new instrumental backing tracks as overdubs to their singing.

Between March 15 and April 4, 1963 Costa took new playbacks to twelve of the thirteen recordings from Rome. Here, Over the Rainbow was reduced by repeating the second stanza, bringing the total playing time of the song from 3:48 min to 2:36 min was significantly reduced. The title Buttons and Bows was not revised and remained completely unpublished until 1996.

The remaining twelve new versions were published together with Days of Wine and Roses finally in May containing in the U.S. 13-track MGM Records album E- 4048 (mono pressing) and SE- 4048 (stereo pressing). The global publication soon followed, among others

  • In Germany as MGM Records album 65 037 ( mono) and 665 037 (stereo) under the Origingaltitel
  • In the UK as MGM Records album MGM -C -940 ( mono) and MGM -CS- 6070 (stereo) under the original title
  • In Brazil as MGM Records album LP- 30 013 (mono ) entitled Connie Francis canta temas Cinematográficos premiados
  • In Italy as MGM Records album EM 4048 (mono) under the title Le canzoni degli Oscar presentate as Connie Francis

When publishing in Australia (as MGM Records album S 027 592 ) and New Zealand (as MGM Records album MCS 5017 ), there was a mix-up with the master tapes, so that the album here and the original backing tracks of 1962 and with the omission of Days of Wine Roses appeared in a 12 -track version.

As Connie Francis recorded 1966 German versions of Over the Rainbow and Moon River for their album tunes, conquer the world, recourse was had to the original backing tracks of 1962.
