Constance Cummings

Constance Cummings ( born May 15, 1910 in Seattle / Washington as Constance Halver city, † 23 November 2005 in Oxfordshire, England) was a U.S. American born, British film and stage actress.

Life

At 18, she had her first role on Broadway, where she was discovered by Samuel Goldwyn, who brought her to Hollywood in 1930. In the same year she was voted one of the WAMPAS baby stars of the year.

Between 1930 and 1934 worked with Cummings in 21 films. Her debut was in The Criminal Code of Howard Hawks. She became famous in Harold Lloyd's Movie Crazy film and in American Madness by Frank Capra. She was married since 1933 with the director and writer Benn W. Levy ( 1900-1973 ), with whom she had a daughter and a son.

From Hollywood moved to England, she turned further films, few of which have been known in the U.S.. One of them, Blithe Spirit was the adaptation of a play by Sir Noël Coward.

1974 Cummings was appointed Commander of the British Empire. In 1975 she refused an honor for lifetime achievement. 1979 Cummings won a Tony Award for Best Actress in the play by Arthur Kopit Wings. In addition, she has a star on the Walk of Fame.

Cumings Constance died on 23 November 2005 in Oxfordshire, where she has lived for decades.
