Constitution of the Gambia

The current Constitution of the Gambia since 1997 in the West African state of Gambia in force and was last revised in 2001. It is divided into 23 chapters with 232 paragraphs.

History

The Gambian government intended to withdraw from the 1965 Commonwealth realm and transform The Gambia into a presidential republic. To this end, a constitutional amendment was necessary, a referendum to 1965 carried out. This failed short of the necessary two-thirds majority. The referendum was repeated in 1970 and adopted by the requisite majority. The Constitution of the First Republic Gambia entered into force in 1970 so.

The Constitution of 1970 was set by the 1994 military coup by the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council repealed.

Through a constitutional referendum was voted on 8 August 1996 on the Constitution of the Second Republic of The Gambia, then entered into force on 1 January 1997.

Finally, the current constitution was amended in 2001.
