Gambian constitutional referendum, 1996

The Constitutional referendum in 1996 in Gambia took place on 8 August 1996. According to one estimate Gambia 1996 had a population of 1,192,548 inhabitants.

Two years after the military coup of 1994, this was the vote on the new constitution and foundation of democratic presidential elections in The Gambia in the same year. Main themes of the change included the parliamentary republic, strengthening the divisions and the descent lowering the minimum age for elections before 21 to 18 years.

Of the approximately 447,000 previously registered voters 383 937 votes were cast, thus the level of voter turnout was 85.9 percent. 70.37 percent had opted for the new constitution, which this could apply.
