Gambian general election, 1982

The parliamentary elections in Gambia in 1982 were held on 4 and 5 May 1982 at the West African nation of Gambia. These elections ( also: General elections) were selected for 35 seats in the House of Representatives (English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP ) could again reach more than three-quarters of the seats. The second strongest force was the National Convention Party (NCP ).

Election procedures and circles

It was (English House of Representatives ) elected for the sixth time the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives had a total of 49 members of which were elected 35 in a direct line. Nine other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number and classification of constituencies remained unchanged compared to the election in 1977.

For the first time the president was elected directly by the people at the same time.

The National Liberation Party (NLP ) is no longer approached.

In the 35 constituencies went to 70 candidates and the majority of voters wanted to get. Among the PPP came with 35 candidates in each constituency, she was challenged by three candidates of UP and 19 candidates of the NCP. Next, there were 13 candidates in this election, that belonged to no party.

It 166 102 valid votes were cast.

In the election, the PPP won 27, the NCP 3 seats. Five candidates who belonged to no party, won their constituency and thus a seat in Parliament.

Easten Kiang 1983

After the candidate of the constituency Easten Kiang, O. Kebba Fadera (independent), had resigned and had given up his seat in Parliament, was scheduled elections in July 1983 in the constituency. Fadera wanted to seek a nomination of PPP. Jallow Sanneh (PPP ) won the constituency for itself.

Sami 1984

After the candidate of the constituency Sami, Kebba N. Leigh (PPP ), had resigned due to illness and had given up his seat in Parliament, was scheduled elections in November 1984 in the constituency. The only candidate was Sarjo Touray (PPP ), so he won the constituency without resistance.

After the candidate of the constituency Basse, M. Bubacarr Baldeh (independent), had lost his seat in Parliament because of no-show, was scheduled elections in December 1985 in the constituency. Jallow Sanneh (PPP ) won the constituency for itself.
