Gambian legislative election, 1962

The parliamentary elections in British Gambia in 1962 were held in May 1962 in the West African British colony of Gambia. These elections ( also: General elections) were selected for 32 seats in the House of Representatives (English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP ) could reach more than half the seats. The second strongest force was the United Party (UP).

Election procedures and circles

It was (English House of Representatives ) elected for the second time the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives had a total of 40 members of which were elected 32 in a direct line. Eight other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number of constituencies was clearly changed since the 1960 election. in the colony of Gambia, they consisted of the city of Bathurst ( the former name of Banjul) and the Kombo-St. Mary Area (also been known as British combo ), there were name changes.

In protectorate however, there were major changes in the schedule lines of the constituencies. The changes in detail:

Predial

In the 32 constituencies went to 64 candidates and the majority of voters wanted to get. Among the PPP came with 27 candidates. It was Challenged by 31 candidates of UP and 5 candidates of the DCA. Compared to the 1960 election is now significantly more independent candidates had joined a party, so there was only one candidate in this election, that belonged to no party.

In a constituency the candidate of the PPP had no opponent, he won the constituency without resistance.

By-elections

After the death of Michael Baldeh (UP) a by-election was conducted in the constituency Basse in the Upper River Administrative Division in October 1965. The constituency won Kebba J. Krubally (PPP).
