Gambian parliamentary election, 2002

The parliamentary elections in Gambia took place in 2002 on 17 January 2002 in the West African Presidential Republic Gambia. The elections for the Gambian National Assembly after 1997 are the second elections of the Second Republic Gambia.

The ruling party Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC ), the President Yahya Jammeh, could gain a clear majority of the seats in Parliament.

Election procedures and circles

For the Gambian National Assembly, which convened in the National Assembly in the capital, Banjul, 48 members are elected. Five more seats in the National Assembly shall be appointed by the President, so that the National Assembly for a term of 53 members of the unicameral has.

The elected members shall be chosen in the 48 constituencies of the country in a direct election with a majority system (simple majority). For the division of the constituencies the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is responsible, this is based on the districts in the administrative divisions of The Gambia. Areas with high population density are adjusted in their division, so is the capital Banjul in three constituencies and the community Kanifing, divided by the country's largest city Serekunda in five constituencies.

An election is no obligation.

The voting itself takes over glass marbles, which is thrown into a locked until the throw- drum as ballot box. These ballot boxes are designed in different colors, depending on the candidate. By this method, the percentage of invalid votes is according to experience very low.

The elections to the National Assembly must take place three months after the election of the President at the latest.

In the last parliamentary elections in Gambia 1997, the APRC gained 33 constituencies, seven were from the United Democratic Party (UDP), two by the National Reconciliation Party (NRP ) and a constituency of the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism ( PDOIS ) won. Also, two independent candidates won their constituency.

In the presidential elections in October 2001, Yahya Jammeh (APRC ) was 52.8 % against his rival candidate Ousainou Darboe (UDP), Hamat Bah ( NRP), Sheriff Dibba (NCP ) and Sidia Jatta ( PDOIS ) interspersed.

Predial

The number of constituencies was increased from 45 to 48 and increased the seats in the Nationalalversammlung to 53. In the management unit Janjanbureh the constituency Niamina East came and in the management unit Kanifing constituencies Jeshwang and Serekunda Central were newly classified.

The election was boycotted by several opposition parties, including the main opposition United Democratic Party.

In the 48 constituencies went to 64 candidates and the majority of voters wanted to get. The NCP was formed for this election with the APRC an alliance; two nominees of the NCP were so on in this election with the APRC and together, their results are expected in the following consideration to the results of the APRC. Thus, the alliance APRC / NCP came in all constituencies with 48 candidates. It was Challenged by 11 candidates of the NRP, PDOIS sent five candidates in the race. Additionally, there was a candidate who belonged to no party.

In 33 constituencies, the candidates of the APRC had no rival candidates.

Of the above 167 817 registered voters (according to another source: 168 820 ) 94 621 votes were cast, so that the voter turnout was 56.4 percent. 35 votes were invalid, so that the number of valid votes amounted to 94 586. The individual votes of the candidates are not yet occupied.

Yahya Jammeh was after he had won the presidential elections, winning the parliamentary elections for his party Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC ). With 45 seats, the APRC moved into Parliament. Another five members were appointed by the President, so that 50 of the 53 seats were part of his wings.

In 33 constituencies, the candidates of the APRC had no opponent, they won the constituency without resistance. In another seven constituencies they could reach the majority of votes, so pulled the APRC with 45 seats in parliament, a further five members appointed by the President, so that 50 of the 53 seats were part of his wings. Two seats gained PDOIS and seating the NRP.

Elected representatives

Among the 52 members of the National Assembly, six were women ( Percentage: 11.54 %), three of which were set up as candidates - two of them unopposed. Three other women have been nominated for the National Assembly.

By-elections

Kombo North 2002

After the elected representative of the constituency Kombo North, Fabakary Cham ( APRC), in February 2002 had died, was scheduled elections in March 2002 in the constituency. Adama Cham ( APRC) won the constituency for itself.
