West Coast Division (Gambia)

The West Coast Region (formerly Western Division and Western Region ) is one of six administrative units of the West African nation of Gambia. The region corresponds to the Local Government Area Brikama.

Geography

The 1764 km ² large region, with the headquarters of the administrative unit in Brikama ( 84 608 inhabitants ) is further divided into nine districts. With 594 854 inhabitants ( 2013 calculation ) it is a densely populated region. The region stretches from the Atlantic coast south of the Gambia River to the Lower River Region in the east. In the north, bordering the Kombo-St. Mary Area, which is a district of the Greater Banjul Area, to the district Kombo North. Brikama, Kombo Central in the district, with 101 119 inhabitants, the largest town in the Western Region.

The nine districts are: Kombo North, Kombo South, Kombo Central, Kombo East, Foni Brefet, Foni Bintang - Karanai, Foni Kansala, Foni Foni Bondali and Jarrol.

Population

According to a survey of 1993 ( former census ), the largest population group, the Mandinka with a share of around five tenths, followed by the Fula and Wolof. The distribution in detail: 45.3 % Mandinka, Fula 11.4%, 5.8%, Wolof, Jola 27.1%, 1.2% Serahule, 2.3% Serer, Aku 0.3 %, 4% Manjago, 0.4% Bambara and 2.2% other ethnicities.

History

End of 2007 in an administrative reform from the former Western Division, Western Region. In October 2010, the Western Region has been changed to West Coast region to make the character of the region in the name of better understood.
