National Assembly of the Gambia

The National Assembly ( German National Assembly ) is the parliament building of the West African State Gambia.

The building

Current Situation

The building, partly with the former name of House of Parliament ( House of German Parliament ) called, is in the small government quarter at the entrance of the capital Banjul. It is located between the streets Marina Parade and Independence Drive, near the Arch 22, the triumphal arch, erected in 1996 to commemorate the 1994 performed by the current president Yahya Jammeh military coup.

The Parliament building is single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan of approximately 20 × 30 meters. The building is accessed from the west side, covered it with a flat roof tent.

Planning

A new parliament building has been constructed since July 2010.

Parliament

The Gambia's political system is built on a unicameral with 53 members. 48 members are elected every five years democratically in a direct vote by the people, five other members appointed by the President.

The last parliamentary elections were held in January 2007, the next elections are expected to be implemented in 2012.
