Gambian parliamentary election, 2007

The parliamentary elections were held in 2007 in Gambia on 25 January 2007 in the West African Presidential Republic Gambia. The elections for the Gambian National Assembly are after 1997 and 2002, the third elections of the Second Republic Gambia.

The ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation party and Construction (APRC ), the President Yahya Jammeh, could gain a clear majority of the seats in Parliament.

Election procedures and circles

For the Gambian National Assembly, which convened in the National Assembly in the capital, Banjul, 48 members are elected. Five more seats in the National Assembly shall be appointed by the President, so that the National Assembly for a term of 53 members of the unicameral has.

The elected members shall be chosen in the 48 constituencies of the country in a direct election with a majority system (simple majority). For the division of the constituencies the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is responsible, this is based on the districts in the administrative divisions of The Gambia. Areas with high population density are adjusted in their division, so is the capital Banjul in three constituencies and the community Kanifing, divided by the country's largest city Serekunda in five constituencies.

An election is no obligation.

The elections to the National Assembly must take place three months after the election of the President at the latest.

In the last parliamentary elections in 2002, the APRC Gambia gained 45 constituencies, two constituencies were from the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism ( PDOIS ) and a constituency of the National Reconciliation Party ( NRP) won. Predial

The nomination by the IEC was from the 4th December 2006 and led through three days. It was intended that the candidates of the APRC were nominated on the first day and the candidates of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development ( NADD ) and their related parties, ie the NRP on the second day. On the third day, then came off the candidate of the United Democratic Party (UDP ) and their related parties. Independent candidates were allowed to nominate himself on all three days. Could be nominated in the administrative capitals of divisions: Banjul, Kanifing, Brikama, Kerewan, Mansa Konko, Janjanbureh and Basse Santa Su.

In the 48 constituencies went to 99 candidates and wanted to get the majority of voters who were allowed to cast their vote in the 989 polling stations. Election day

Of the above 628 160 registered voters 262 765 valid votes were cast, so that the voter turnout was 41.8 percent.

In five constituencies, the candidates of the APRC had no opponent, so that they could win without resistance the constituency for itself.

With 42 constituencies won the APRC moved with 42 seats in parliament, a further five members appointed by the President, so that 47 of the 53 seats were part of his wings. Five seats gained UDP and seating the NADD, NRP could not win a constituency. The independent candidate Ebrima Jammeh was able to beat his rival candidates of the APRC.

Halifa Sallah, Hamat Bah and also the longtime politician Kemenseng Jammeh (UDP) could not reach the majority in their constituencies.

Nianija 2008

After Dawda Manneh of the representatives of the constituency Nianija, the party was leaked (APRC ), 2008, by-elections were held on 18 December. Wuli East 2011

After the elected representative of the constituency Wuli East, Bekai Camara (APRC ), passed away on March 6, 2011, by-elections were conducted on 28 April 2011 at the constituency. Saidou V. Sabally (APRC ) won the constituency for itself.

Kombo East 2011

On April 9, 2011, is the elected representative of the constituency Kombo East, Lamin Bojang MM (APRC ), died. The IEC decided to declare no elections and attributes this to the ongoing preparations for the upcoming presidential election and the subsequent general election.
