Central River Division

The Central River Region (formerly Central River Division ) is one of six administrative units of the West African nation of Gambia. The region corresponds to the Local Government Area Janjanbureh and Local Government Area Kuntaur.

Geography

The 2895 km ² large region, with the headquarters of the administrative unit in Janjanbureh ( 3998 inhabitants), is further divided into ten districts. With 207 574 inhabitants ( 2013 calculation ), the division extends on both banks of the Gambia River. In the west, adjacent to the Lower River Region and the North Bank Region to Upper River Region in the east. The headquarters of the administrative unit in Janjanbureh located on the island Janjanbureh Iceland, which forms its own district Janjanbureh. The largest town with 8535 inhabitants in the district Bansang Fulladu West.

The ten districts are: Lower Saloum, Upper Saloum, Nianija, Niani, Sami, Niamina Dankunku, Niamina West, Niamina East, West and Fulladu Janjanbureh.

Population

According to a survey of 1993 ( former census ), the largest population group, the Mandinka with a share of about three -tenths, followed by the Fula and Wolof. The distribution in detail: Mandinka 29.5%, 37.2%, Fula, Wolof 26%, Jola 0.6 %, 4.1% Serahule, 0.4% Serer, Aku 0.1 %, 0.3% Manjago, 0.6 % Bambara and 1.2% other ethnicities.

History

As part of the Africanization of the former name MacCarthy Iceland was renamed the Central River Division in 1995. The island was renamed Janjanbureh MacCarthy Iceland Iceland and the administrative capital George Town in Janjanbureh.
