Gambian legislative election, 1951

The parliamentary elections in British Gambia in 1951 found in the West African British colony of Gambia place in 1951. These elections were for three elected seats in the Legislative Council ( english Legislative Council ), a forerunner of the House of Representatives (English House of Representatives ).

The seats were won by John Colley Faye, Ibrahima Garba Momodou - Jahumpa and Henry A. Madi.

Election procedures and circles

It was the second time that representatives were elected to the Legislative Council.

From one constituency election in 1947 was created two. From the city of Bathurst ( the former name of Banjul ) two members and the Kombo-St. Mary Area (also been known as British combo ) one member elected directly.

Predial

Before the election, formed the first interest groups and the first political parties were founded. Thus, under the leadership of the Anglican priest John Colley Faye, who belonged to the people of the Serere, in June 1951, the Gambia Democratic Party (GDP ) was founded. The Bathurst Young Muslim Society ( BYMS ) grouped around the Muslim candidate Momodou Ibrahima Garba - Jahumpa, from the BYMS in 1952 the Gambia Muslim Congress.
