Muslim Congress Party

The Gambia Muslim Congress (GMC ) ( German Gambian Muslim gathering ) was a political party in Gambia.

History

It was founded in January 1952 in the British colony of Gambia as the second political party. It evolved out of Bathurst Young Muslim Society and other small organizations under the leadership of Ibrahima Garba Momodou - Jahumpa.

It saw itself as a combination of religious affiliation and political activity. In this respects, the party was not successful. Garba - Jahumpa collaborated with the colonial administration and an elected member in a precursor of parliament. In retrospect but hurt the reputation of this cooperation the party.

Before the parliamentary elections in 1960, the GMC united with the Gambia Democratic Party ( GDP) under the leadership of Reverend John Colley Faye and formed the new party Democratic Congress Alliance ( DCA).

Political differences between Garba - Jahumpa and Faye however, led to the early dissolution of the DCA. Garba - Jahumpa on his way to the newly formed Gambia Congress Party ( GCP) away.
