Gambian general election, 1972

The parliamentary elections in Gambia in 1972 took place on March 29, 1972 at the West African nation of Gambia. These elections ( also: General elections) were selected for 32 seats in the House of Representatives (English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP ) could reach three-quarters of the seats again. The second strongest force was the United Party (UP).

Election procedures and circles

It was (English House of Representatives ) elected for the fourth time the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives had a total of 40 members of which were elected 32 in a direct line. Eight other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number and distribution of electoral districts was compared to the 1966 election does not change.

Predial

The Gambia Congress Party ( GCP) under the leadership Ibrahima Garba - Jahumpa Momodou was disbanded in 1968, Garba - Jahumpa joined the PPP.

In the 32 constituencies went to 63 candidates and the majority of voters wanted to get. Among the PPP came with 32 candidates in each constituency, she was challenged by 14 candidates of UP. Next, there were 19 candidates in this election, that belonged to no party.

Bathurst North 1972

After the elected representative of the constituency Bathurst North, Pierre Sarr N'Jie (UP), had lost his seat in Parliament because of non-appearance, by-elections were scheduled in December 1972 in the constituency. Musa A Jobe (UP) won the constituency for itself.

Sandu 1973

After the elected representative of the constituency Sandu, Batapa Drammeh (independent), had lost his seat in Parliament because of non-appearance, by-elections were scheduled in November 1973 in the constituency. Musa S. Dabo (PPP ) won the constituency for itself.

Eastern Foni 1973

After the elected representative of the constituency of Eastern Foni, Momodou Sanyang N. (PPP ), had died, elections were scheduled in November 1973 in the constituency. The only candidate was Ismaila Jammeh B. (PPP ), so he won the constituency without resistance.
