Continental Congress

The Continental Congress (English Continental Congress) consisted of delegates from the 13 colonies of North America, who wanted to fight against restrictions on the freedom of American citizens. Since the Congress 1774-1789 met, its foundation was preceded immediately the American Revolutionary War. There were two Continental Congresses.

First Continental Congress

The first Continental Congress met from September 5, 1774 to October 26, 1774 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Measures against the Einquartierungsakt and letters were written directly to the king decided that should bypass the British Parliament. The main topics of the Congress were a declaration of solidarity of all the colonies and the imposition of a one-year export and import barrier against Great Britain. Important advisor was the later second president of the United States, John Adams, representatives of Virginia was George Washington.

Second Continental Congress

The second Continental Congress consisted of 10 May 1775 to 2 March 1789. It met at different locations. Since 1775, the Congress was preparing the American Revolution against England. It created a continental army and its own currency, the Continental dollar.

On July 4, 1776, written by Thomas Jefferson Declaration of Independence was presented, first signer was John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress.
