Aircraft engines

The engines of Continental Motors are in addition to those of Lycoming today the most widely used piston aircraft engines for general aviation in the performance class above 100 kW (136 hp). They enjoyed and enjoy the reputation of a very high reliability. This occurs because on the one hand, therefore, that the engines with very large displacement - an IO -360 with 132 kW ( 180 hp ) has 5.8 liter displacement - with relatively low speed (approx. 2400 rpm and 2600 rpm in cruise flight at take-off power ) run. On the other engines are only developed very carefully. The said engine consumed during cruise about 35-45 l AvGas or (230 g / hp-hr ). Spreads are also the engines Continental O -200 Continental IO - 240. The engines of the C-90, O- 200, O- 240, IO-360 were also produced by Rolls- Royce in the UK under license.

Engine types and variants

The engine designations provide information on the technical characteristics:

  • O - Boxer engine ( piston Opposite )
  • I - fuel injection ( injection)
  • T - Turbocharger
  • G - Gear ( Gear)
  • L (front) - Links runners ( Left)
  • L (rear) - liquid cooling (liquid cooling )
  • F - FADEC

The number, however, indicates the approximate engine capacity in cubic inches.
