Coppo di Marcovaldo

Coppo di Marco Valdo (* probably in Florence in 1225; † ca 1276 ) was an Italian painter who was active 1250-1275.

Life

Coppo di Marco Valdo is one of the main masters of Tuscan painting of the second half of the 13th century. About his background and education is not known. However, his early works show a strong Byzantine influence. Apparently, however, he was also familiar with the Carolingian miniature paintings, because he managed to combine these two styles in his early pictures. From the feeble Byzantine models he was able to create new, highly dramatic and emotional motives. He painted powerful, powerful figures with vivid light and shadow and hard dividing lines between the draping.

In 1260 Coppo di Marco Valdo is performed on the list of fighters in the battle of Montaperti. Although no definite evidence, it is likely that he thereby fell into Sienese captivity, because in 1261 he painted and dated in Siena his so-called " Madonna del Bordone " ( Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi ). In the following years he seems to have been heavily influenced by the Sienese painting. His motives were, although colorful, much sadder. Enhances he worked with gold, which he now gave a very special shine in his play of colors. At the same time he exercised a not inconsiderable influence on the Sienese painting itself. Among the clearly influenced by him, among other artists Guido da Siena was one of the main masters of the Sienese painting. At the same time he was the teacher of his son Salerno, with whom he collaborated, against 1274 in Pistoia received the commission to paint five " pretty pictures " for the cathedral. Of these panels is only one work has received, which is mainly assigned on stylistic grounds to the Son.
