Corbicula fluminea

The clams ( Corbicula, from Latin corbis basket = ) are a genus of the family of clams ( Corbiculidae ). The entrained to Europe and often difficult auseinanderzuhaltenden Corbicula fluminea and Corbicula two types fluminalis be collectively referred to as Asian Asian clam.

Biology

The animals show internal fertilization. The young hatch within the parent animals ( ovoviviparous ) and are relatively small ( much smaller than the outwardly similar looking shell family of Sphaeriidae ).

Occurrence

The various species of the genus Corbicula occur in the central and south / south-eastern part of Asia (Russia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, the Middle East), in the central and southern part of Africa, and probably also in Australia. Through procrastination individual species have arrived in the 20th century in Europe and North and South America and have some very strong populations formed.
