Grobgerippte Asian clam ( Corbicula fluminea )

The clams ( Corbiculidae ) family includes several genera of freshwater mussels, including the eponymous main genus Corbicula (see clams ( genus ) ). The oldest representative of the family are from the Carnian ( Upper Triassic ).

Occurrence in Europe

In the Pleistocene, representative of the family of clams were also widespread in Central Europe. Shells of this period can be found in the Mainz Basin and the Netherlands. With the end of the last ice age, around 11,000 years ago, the members of the genus Corbicula in Europe died out. In the 20th century, but they were introduced in Europe (for more details see under Asian Asian clam ).

  • Pseudocyrena, some lying around the Caribbean parts of Central America
  • Solielletia, Ethiopia
  • Villorita, eastern parts of South America
