Cordelia Urueta

Cordelia Urueta ( born June 5, 1908 in Mexico City; † November 3, 1995 ibid ) was a Mexican painter. Like Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo embezzled Urueta few years of life and gave her birth year 1908, but investigations indicate their birth in 1897 or 1900.

Life

Urueta was the daughter of the writer Jesús Urueta Siqueiros and the niece of writer and politician Justo Sierra. In 1919 she went with her parents to Argentina when her father was sent there as a Mexican representative. In this function he then went with his family to Uruguay. After Uruetas mother died, his father returned with Cordelia to Mexico, where she fell ill and suffered from severe anemia. After her recovery, caused Dr. Atl, who was a close friend of the family, that she could learn the painting at the open-air painting school ( Escuela de Pintura al Aire Libre ) in the old convent of Churubusco. In 1929 she went to New York and placed there along with Rufino Arellanes Tamayo and José Clemente Orozco in the gallery founded by Alma Reed. In 1932 she received a teaching assignment of the Secretaría de Educación Pública. Uruetas abstract images were seen in Mexico and in Europe on exhibitions. She was a founding member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana.
