Coregonus alpinus

The Kropfer (Coregonus alpinus ), also referred to as Kröpfli, is a freshwater fish of the genus Coregonus. It is endemic in the Lake Thun in Switzerland.

Features

Kropfer reaches the standard length of about 250 mm. The length of the pectoral fins is 17 to 23 percent of standard length in specimens with more than 200 mm standard length. The eye diameter is 20 to 24 percent of the head length. There are 13 to 28 gill rakers. The fins are edged with black.

Habitat and behavior

His lifestyle is lacustrine. He lives in the deep water area of ​​the lake Thuners. The spawning season is from August of December. The eggs are deposited mainly in the vicinity of deltas at a depth of 40 to 150 m. Its diet consists of invertebrates, especially chironomid.

Systematics and status

The Kropfer 1885 was described as a subspecies of Coregonus alpinus schinzii. In 1997, he was charged by Maurice Kottelat in the species status. The IUCN classifies it as " not at risk " ( least concern ).
