Coregonus bezola

The Bezoule (Coregonus bezola ) is an extinct freshwater fish of the genus Coregonus within the family Coregonidae. She was endemic to the Lac du Bourget in the Savoie département.

Features

The Bezoule reached a standard length of 320 mm. She had 26 to 33 gill rakers. On the lateral line were 81 to 87 scale rows. The back was yellowish to brownish, the sides were silvery with a yellowish tint.

Way of life

The Bezoule lived in the deep water of the Lac du Bourget. The spawning season was from January to February. The eggs were laid in 70 to 80 depth on the mud bottom.

Status

The Bezoule 2008 was declared by the IUCN to be extinct. The last clearly documented specimen was caught in the late 19th century. According to local fishermen, the species has survived into the 1960s. The causes of their disappearance are unclear. In the museum collections only a preserved specimen exists.
