Corinto is a port city with a population of 22,000 (2005) on the northwest Pacific coast of the Central American state of Nicaragua.

Geography

Geographical Location

Corinto is located 150 km north- west of the capital Managua on the Pacific coast. It belongs to the department of Chinandega. Corinto is located on a peninsula and is connected with two bridges to the mainland.

History

The city was named after the Greek city of Corinth.

In March / April 1878, the city was occupied by a squadron of the Imperial Navy under the iron stucco affair.

In April 1895 Corinto was occupied shortly by a squadron of the Royal Navy. Background were disputes between Great Britain and Nicaragua over Nicaraguan debt settlements.

During the Contra war in the harbor in the 80s served as a focal point for Cuban and Soviet merchant ships, whereupon the CIA in 1984 the port mined.

Economy and infrastructure

The main economic activities are fishing and especially the harbor. The Port of Corinto (Spanish for Puerto Corinto ) is by far the most important port in Nicaragua. About two -thirds of all imports and exports of the country running over the sea go over this port ( 1,984,241 t in 2007).
