Cornelis Schut

Cornelius Schut (* baptized May 13, 1597 in Antwerp, † April 29, 1655 ) was a Flemish painter.

Life

The exact date of birth of the artist is unknown, he was baptized on 13 May 1597th Schut was already 1618/1619 Master of the Guild of St. Luke and reported in the 1630s on several apprentices. 1635 involved the artist together with Peter Paul Rubens at the festive decorations on the occasion of the triumphal entry of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in Ghent and Antwerp after his victory in the Battle of Nördlingen. Until then, heavily influenced by Rubens, Schut developed a personal style, which is characterized by lively, working in opposites compositions and lighting and cool colors. In a free, picturesque manner reproduced Schut several of his own paintings. He also etched many Madonna and Child scenes, as well as religious, historicizing and allegories.

Work

Schut painted numerous altarpieces for Belgian and Cologne churches, including some historicizing and allegorical representations. His major works include the Assumption of the Virgin in the dome of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp ( 1647), the Beheading of St. George of Fine Arts (1643 /44), the Coronation of the Virgin ibid. on the main altar of the Borromaeus Church, a worship of Mary ( about 1638 ) and a Martyrdom of S. Museum. Gereon in St. Gereon in Cologne. The latter two works seem to have been destroyed by the air raids on Cologne in World War II. Frequently Schut also painted centerpieces to floral wreaths by Daniel Seghers, these are in turn located in numerous churches in Antwerp, Brussels, Namur, Dendermonde and Temse. His etchings summed up in his work Cornelii Schut Schut Antwerpiensis picturae ludentis genius together etc..
