Cornelius Haga

Corneli (u ) s Haga (* January 28, 1578 in Schiedam, † August 12 1654 in The Hague ) was the first Dutch ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

Life

Haga was born in Schiedam. His father was Dirk Lambrechtszoon, businessman and member of the city council of Schiedam and active formative church member of the community. Haga visited before studying at the University of Leiden Law, a Latin school in Schiedam. Later he went into the diplomatic service and was ambassador in Stockholm. After that, he was from 1612 to 1639, the first diplomatic representative of the Netherlands in Constantinople Opel. Haga laid there the foundations of diplomatic relations and built numerous consulates in the major ports and trading centers in the Ottoman Empire, for example, in Thessaloniki, Athens, Izmir, Aleppo, Tunis and Algiers.

In 1639 Haga returned to the Netherlands. From 1645 until his death in 1654 he was President of the High Council of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland. Cornelius Haga and his wife Alithea Brasser were buried in the church of Schiedam.
