Cornus sessilis is a species of the genus of dogwood (Cornus ) within the family of Dogwood ( Cornaceae ). This Cornelian cherry grows as a large shrub, their distribution area is located in western North America. There it is called "black dogwood fruit " or " miner's dogwood ."

Description

Cornus sessilis grows as a deciduous, large shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 5 meters. The bark of young branches is green, the older branches is gray or yellowish brown. The against-constant leaves are short-stalked. The elliptical leaf blade is tapered at the ends and about 5 to 10 centimeters long. On the underside of leaves are short, rough hair, in the axils of leaf veins, longer soft. In the autumn the leaves turn dark red.

The inflorescences are, as with other Kornelkirschen also, of four brownish- yellow, an inch large bracts surrounding the fall during the flowering period. Below this bracts followed by two vegetative buds, including two more bracts that envelop the entire complex buds. The flowers are close to several in heads together. They open before the leaves appear. Four sepals are fused cup-shaped. The four free petals are yellowish.

It evolve stone fruits which are immature greenish white to color during ripening through yellow and red to a shiny purple - black.

Dissemination

This cornel species is widespread in the mountains of northwestern California. She gets there at altitudes of 1500 meters and is mainly grown on the banks of small streams. Dominant at these sites are different Conifers: coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa).
