Corporal

The Corporal ( Corporal [ engl. ] Caporal [ French ], from corpus, corporis [lat ] = the body ) is in many armed forces of the lowest rank of non-commissioned officers. According to the NATO rank code however, it is equated with the upper Corporal ( OR4a ) of the Bundeswehr. In Switzerland, this rank is also used in the fire service.

In previous German armies of the lowest NCO rank was also temporarily designated by Corporal.

Austria

In the Austrian Federal Army Corporal is a batch rank (use group MZCh ). In the k.u.k. Army, he was still one of the NCOs (and accordingly put the yellow-black Unteroffiziersportepee on ). Today, the Austrian service level corresponds to approximately the ranks Corporal or Corporal in the German Bundeswehr. The corporal can take over tasks in peacetime commander of troop strength to any group strength. In foreign missions, he is referred to in English as a Corporal ( Cpl ).

Switzerland

In the Swiss Army, the corporal of the lowest commissioned officer grade ( NATO Code: OR -4). He is a rank above the enlisted rank Lance Corporal.

Until the Army XXI reform ( with effect from 1 January 2004), he fulfilled the role of group leader. Since this function is taken over by the sergeant, the corporal rank specialists is reserved without management.

The rank of corporal, there are also still in the field post, which is due to the fact that the formation of a field post corporal lasts much shorter than that of a regular group leader. Also in the NBC defense all troops there are the rank of corporal yet. Here, soldiers are transported to a special sub- officer training to corporals.

In foreign missions, he is referred to in English as a Corporal ( Cpl ).

Other forces

  • France, Great Britain, United States, in France, Great Britain and the United States, the promotion to corporal is carried according to the existence of a separate course. In France, the Corporal still one of the teams. In the UK and the USA, he is one of the non-commissioned officers - although paradoxically at NATO comparison as " top Stabsgefreiter " it will be counted only to the teams.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands, is " Korporaal " after a prolonged period of service in the team ranking.

In the Swiss Guard, there is also the rank of corporal and the corporal of the vice.

Prussia

In Prussia, the " Corporal " an up to 30 -strong squad faced. The corporal was ranked between the corporal and the sergeant or sergeant. The name of Corporal in 1856 converted into " Sergeant ". As a free corporal to 1807 the ( noble ) officer candidates were named.
