Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences

The Council for International Organizations of Medical Science (English Council for International Organization of Medical Sciences, CIOMS ) is an international, non-governmental and not -for-profit organization that into by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1949 life was launched.

Through its membership, CIOMS is a substantial part of the scientific biomedical community. In 2003, the CIOMS counted 48 international members, mostly represented by national academies and councils from medical research.

The main objectives

  • The facilitation and promotion of international activities in the field of biomedical science
  • The care of the relations with the United Nations and its specialized agencies (mainly WHO and UNESCO)
  • General services for the benefit of the scientific interests of the biomedical community

Implementation of the objectives

  • Create a policy on bioethics
  • Health policy, ethics and humanitarian values
  • Development of drugs and their benefits and risks (eg potential side effects )
  • International Nomenclature of Diseases

Development of drugs and their benefits or risks

At this point, the CIOMS has created several working groups that take care of the needs assessment and surveillance of adverse drug reactions. The following were developed by the working groups:

  • CIOMS I for adverse drug reaction and SUSAR
  • CIOMS II for collecting reports over a certain period
  • CIOMS III guidelines for core areas of clinical research ( examiner brochure, etc.)
  • CIOMS IV Directive on the welfare - risk analysis for approved drugs and detection of signals
  • CIOMS V changes in pharmacovigilance, pragmatic approaches (eg Standardized MedDRA Queries)
  • CIOMS VI management of clinical trials
  • CIOMS VII development of a collective report for clinical research
  • CIOMS VIII early in pharmacovigilance
