Cradle Mountain

The Cradle Mountain is a mountain in the west of the Australian state of Tasmania. It lies in the northern part of the Cradle Mountain -Lake St - Clair National Park, reaches a height of 1,545 m and is because of its beauty one of the main attractions in Tasmania. The mountain consists of Diabassäulen, similar to other mountains in the region.

Here the Overland Track, a world-renowned long distance footpath starts. The trail meanders through a variety of landscapes to its end after 80 km at Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest lake.

Rise

In the area around the Cradle Mountain there are a number of hiking trails. The mountain will be climbed throughout the year often by tourists. From the parking lot at the Dove Lake of the strenuous path takes (including return ) 6,5 hours. The climb up the rocky part requires several hundred meters climbing over large boulders. The ascent is particularly important to ensure the weather, which can deteriorate rapidly at any time in this area. From the top there is a spectacular panoramic view of the Dove Lake, Barn Bluff and the Mount Ossa.

Details

The mountain rises above the glacier-carved lakes Dove Lake, Lake Wilks and Crater Lake.

It has four peaks. According to the size ordered, these are:

  • Cradle Mountain - 1545 m
  • Smithies Peak - 1,527 m
  • Weindorfers Tower - 1459m
  • Little Horn - 1,355 m

The entire mountain was for its resemblance to a grave shovel (English mining cradle ) named.

Flora

The area is planted with a variety of alpine and sub-alpine vegetation, such as the colorful summer beech ( Nothofagus gunnii ) and the button grass ( Gymnoschoenus spherocephalus ), which dominates the damp, sour grass alpine meadows. The summer book is special in that the Australian flora is mostly evergreen. Other plants on the mountain are heart berry, alpine strawberry, Telopea, crescent shed spruce and cypress -like scales spruce.

Access to the parking area and

On Ronny Creek, the outflow of Lake Dove, there is a car park, which is about 8 km from the visitor center of the National Park. To the visitor center, a shuttle bus is set up.

In addition to the possibility Driving your own car or a hike on the Overland Track, there is also a long distance bus from Launceston and Devonport. Many private bus tours also stop at the visitor center.
