Cromwell Gorge

The Cromwell Gorge is a deep gorge of the Clutha River in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand.

It runs south from the town of Cromwell about 20 km from Alexandra.

Previously stone fruits grown in the area of the gorge. The canyon was a major attraction in the beginnings of the development of the New Zealand tourism. However, the largest part of the gorge sank in the 1990s under the policy of " Think Big " in Lake Dunstan, which was dammed up behind the Clyde Dam. This led to the setting of the Otago Central Railway behind Clyde and the relocation of State Highway 8 to the east bank of the ravine.
