Cronobacter sakazakii ( syn.. Enterobacter sakazakii Farmer et al, 1980) is a bacterium of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Cronobacter sakazakii is rod- shaped and movable by flagella. A characteristic feature is the yellow pigmentation of the bacterial cultures.

Cronobacter sakazakii can cause in infants septicemia (sepsis), meningitis ( meningitis) and necrotizing enterocolitis, a dangerous intestinal disease. The rarely occurring infection can be done on the baby food, as Cronobacter sakazakii was detected in milk powder. On the occurrence and way of life in a free environment, little is known of the bacterium.

In the English literature, there are Cronobacter sakazakii often under the name "Yellow- Pigmented Enterobacter cloacae ."

Because of taxonomic advances the Art 2008 Gen. together with other species in a new genus Cronobacter was nov. provided.
