Cryptandra is a genus of the family of the buckthorn family ( Rhamnaceae ). It is native to Australia, and includes more than 40 species.

Description

Cryptandra are evergreen, often thorny shrubs. The very small and narrow leaves are hairy white hairs on their underside and are often in tufts.

The flowers are either single flowers or head or ears like cymes. The flower cups is tube- to bell-shaped, the lobed often weak, studded with stellate hairs Diskus is a ring shape.

The ovary is inferior, the part of fruits open at the far end as well as laterally. The three-lobed aril is succulent.

Distribution and systematics

Cryptandra are all native to the non-tropical Australia. The genus was first described in 1798 by James Edward Smith. Within the buckthorn plants it is classified in the tribe Pomaderreae. The genus includes about 40 species.
