Cuisnahuat

Cuisnahuat on the map of El Salvador

Cuisnahuat ( Nawat: Kwisnawat ) is a municipality in El Salvador in the department of Sonsonate.

Name

The name Kwisnawat can be used as " water ( flow ) of the four thorns " translated. The first component cuis should go back to this version at Nawat joke, "thorn "; nawi is "four" and at "water". Another possible explanation is " four rivers from the sky (or from above) " because kwis "heaven" means.

History

Cuisnahuat was founded by Pipil and belonged to the rule of Cuzcatlán. In 1528 it was conquered by the Spaniards.

On 12 June 1824 the village became part of the Partido Cuisnahuat Opico in the department of San Salvador. On April 6, 1827 came to the Partido Izalco in the department of Sonsonate.

Pipil culture today

According to the last census in 2007 Cuisnahuat El Salvador is one of the few places where there are speakers of Pipil language Nawat, namely 15 of the nation's 97 speakers. Due to the efforts of the indigenous organization Asociación Coordinadora de Comunidades indigenous de El Salvador ( Accies ) and Don Bosco University in San Salvador is taught despite the lack of government programs at a school in Cuisnahuat Nawat.
