Cumaná

Cumana is a city in the north- east of Venezuela. Its population is 310,763 (as of October 30, 2011 ). Cumana is the seat of the Archdiocese of Cumana.

Geography

The capital of the state of Sucre with a sea port located at the mouth of the river Manzanares in the Caribbean Sea.

History

An ethnic group of the Caribbean Cultural Committee, which Khaimah, as well as the root of the Guaikeries lived in this region when the Spaniards arrived.

1520, the city was founded by Spanish conquest and was the first permanent settlement of Europeans in the Americas. Earthquakes have already destroyed the city several times, notably in 1766, 1797 and 1929.

The city was the first place that Alexander von Humboldt visited during his journey through America. He explored the area around the town center in 1799 and observed there on 12 November 1799, the Leonids.

On August 11, 1929 attempted revolt of General Román Delgado Chalbaud took place in the port of Cumana, which was also the German cargo steamer Falcon was involved. Immediately after the landing of the insurgents came to the Guzmán Blanco Bridge (now Avenida Bermúdez ) to a clash with government troops in which both Delgado and the leader of the government forces and Governor of the State of Sucre, General Emilio Fernández fell. The insurgents fled to the hawk and left Cumana on the same day.

Economy

Cumana has a natural harbor, which is equipped with modern facilities for the discharge of cargo. Main export products are coffee, tobacco and sugar cane. In the city, distilleries, furniture and textile factories and several cigar-manufacturers have settled. Cumana has a university, the Universidad de Oriente (founded in 1958).

Attractions

The city has a number of colonial buildings in excellent condition. One can from the beach on an old Spanish fortress, the Castle of San Antonio de la Eminencia see. You can also use the 1669 -built castle of Santa Maria de la Cabeza visit where the Maritime Museum is located.
