Cumberland is a city (town ) with 7,211 inhabitants ( 2010 census ) in the state of Maine in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the center of the village in southern Maine Cumberland County and is part of the metropolitan Portland - South Portland - Biddeford. The neighboring municipalities are Yarmouth in the North East, North Yarmouth and Gray in the north, Windham and Falmouth in the west to the south. In the southeast of the city is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

The city is divided into three settlements, Cumberland Foreside, Cumberland Center and West Cumberland. Cumberland Center is a census -designated place. In the urban area mainly takes place agriculture.

History

The city was spun off in 1821 from the town of North Yarmouth. Ephraim Sturdivant, the first treasurer of the city, was selected by the city council to give the new town its name. He chose the name of the county in which the city lies.

The Cumberland Fair, one of the largest agricultural fairs in Maine, has been organized since 1868 annually in September in Cumberland instead.

On 1 July 2007 Chebeague Iceland was separated from the urban area of Cumberland and established as a separate city.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

Since 1848 the town has a railway connection. The main route of the later Grand Trunk Railway runs along the coast through the city, which decreed at this track as a train station, but which is no longer used. A second sheet was parallel, but something built further inland in 1851 by the Portland and Kennebec Railroad. At their station chain from 1871 to 1912 the main access route to Bangor. The train station is a freight station still in operation today. The last passenger train stopped in 1960 in Cumberland, which was finally only needs breakpoint.

The town was developed from 1898 to 1933 by a range of Tram Portland, led by Portland Cumberland to Yarmouth. By West Cumberland went from 1914 to 1933 also the Portland - Lewiston Interurban Railroad.
