Cumberland County (Maine)

Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maine in the United States. Thus, it is the county with the highest population density in Maine. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Portland.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau of the United States, the county has a total area of 3,152 square kilometers. Of these, 988 square kilometers (that's 31.34 percent of the total area) of water. The county is bordered clockwise to the County: Androscoggin County, Sagadahoc County, York County and Oxford County.

History

In Portland is the historic McLellan - Sweat Mansion (also known as LDM Sweat Memorial Art Museum or Sweat Mansion). The mansion is located in the High Street at number 111 Built in 1800 the building was taken as a historical monument with the number 70,000,073 on March 5, 1970 of the National Register of Historic Places. It was inscribed as the National Historic Landmark.

According to the census of 2000, there were 265 612 people in the county. There were 107 989 households and 67 709 families. The population density was 123 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.74 % White, 1.06 % African American, 0.29 % Native American, 1.40 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.35 % from other races groups; 1.13% were descended from two or more races. 0.95 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 23.30 % under the age of 18, 8.40 % from 18 to 24, 31.30 % from 25 to 44 years, 23.60% between 45 and 64 years and 13.30% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.80 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.20 males.

The median income for a household was $ 44,048, and the median income for a family was $ 54,485. Males have a median income of $ 35,850, women $ 27,935. The per capita income was $ 23,949. 7.90% of the population and 5.20% of families are below the poverty line. 9.10% of those under age 18 and 7.40% were 65 years or older.
