Washington County (Maine)
Washington County is a county located in the state of Maine in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Machias.
It is sometimes called because in this easternmost County, the sun rises earlier than in the rest of the United States Washington County as the " County of the sunrise " (Sunrise County).
Economy
The economy of Washington County is mainly focused on fishing, logging and to a small extent on tourism. Large business enterprises are missing; Tourism also is not as pronounced as in the rest of Maine.
A special status has the blueberry harvest for the County: 90 percent of U.S. production is created here.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8430 square kilometers. Of these, 1 778 square kilometers, according to 21.09 per cent, of water. Washington has in the small town of Lubec the easternmost mainland point of the United States. The most eastern point location is the city located on a barrier island of Eastport.
Along the coast of Washington County occur on the highest Tidenhübe: average about 6.5 meters (18 feet) on the coast near Lubec, Jonesport and Eastport, and even about 7 meters (20 feet) at the mouth of St. Croix River in Calais. The county is bordered clockwise to the County: York County (New Brunswick ) (Canada ), Charlotte County (New Brunswick ) (Canada ), Hancock County, Aroostook County and Penobscot County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 33 941 people in the county. There were 14,118 households, and 9,303 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.48 % White, 0.26 % African American, 4.43 % Native American, 0.30 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.44 % from other races groups; 1.07% were descended from two or more races. 0.81 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,118 households out of which 28.00 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.10 % were married couples living together, 9.50% had a female householder with no husband. 34.10 % were non-families. 28.30% of all households and 13.10% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.84 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 22.90 % under the age of 18, 8.00 % from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44 years, 25.60 % between 45 and 64 years and 17.30 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.50 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.90 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,869, and the median income for a family was $ 31,657. Males have a median income of $ 28,347, women $ 20,074. The per capita income was $ 14,119. 19.00 % of the population and 14.20% of families are below the poverty line. 22.40 % of those under age 18 and 19.20 % were 65 years or older.
