Features

Hair tails are long depending on the type 18 centimeters to 2.30 meters. They have a long, ribbon-shaped, laterally strongly flattened body. The front fanged mouth column reaches up to the eyes, the lower jaw of the pointed snout faces. The dorsal fin extends almost over the entire body, the caudal fin is small and bifurcated, or absent, the ventral fin is reduced to a sting, the anal fin usually missing. The animals do not have scales. Before the eyes is only ever an outer nostril. The swirl number is 98 to 192

System

Subfamily Aphanopodinae

In the subfamily Aphanopodinae the caudal fin is small and forked. The small ventral fin has a scale-like spine and a rudimentary soft fin ray. Partial lose adult animals the ventral fins. The long dorsal fin is divided by an incision in the 38-46 fin rays supported hartstrahligen and the soft-rayed part.
