Cylindropuntia imbricata is a species of the genus of the cylindrical prickly pear cactus ( Cylindropuntia ) in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The epithet means the type of roof tiles shaped. Foreign language common names are " Abrojo ", " Candelabrum Cactus ," " Cane Cactus ," " Cane Cholla ", " Cardenche ", " Cardon ", " Coyonostle ", " Joconostle ", " Tesajo ", " Tesajo ", " Tesajo Macho", " Tree Cholla ", " Vela de Coyote " and " Xoconostle ".

Description

Cylindropuntia imbricata grows like a tree up to 3 feet or more high and as wide and often forms at the age of a woody stem. The branches are inclined apart, often upwards. The strong gehöckerten end links are about 2 to 3 inches long. The bumps themselves are flattened 2 to 2.5 inches long and laterally. The 8 to 30 spines up to 3 inches long. They are brown with thin sheaths.

The 4 to 6 inches long and up to 9 inches wide, dark pink to magenta or reddish magenta colored flowers appear on the cylindrical to clavate growing tips. The equally strong gehöckerten fruits are 2 to 4.5 inches long, obovate, spineless and yellow. You can reach diameter 2-4 cm.

Systematics and distribution

Cylindropuntia imbricata is native to the U.S. states of Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, and throughout the middle of Mexico. In southwestern Kansas, the species is hardy. Cylindropuntia imbricata is one of the wild already in Europe cacti. In Switzerland and France occasional supplies are available, while the species is already established as in Spain. In South Africa, it was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century and is distributed with the exception of the province of Natal in the country. Cylindropuntia imbricata belongs there to the cacti species that are attacked as weeds biologically.
