Cymbopogon refractus

The lemon grass ( Cymbopogon ) are a genus within the family of grasses ( Poaceae ). The 55 to 70 species are native to the tropical and subtropical regions, especially Asia, but also Africa and Australia (ten species).

Description

They are mostly perennial, rarely annual, herbaceous plant, reaching heights of growth from 15 to 300 cm depending on the type. They form dense clumps. Some species form rhizomes. Your most crude, simple leaves develop an aromatic scent.

The blooms are triple. There are only three stamens present. The pens are free.

System

The botanical genus name Cymbopogon is derived from the Greek words Kumbe for boat, because the boat -shaped spathes and pogon for Bart, this refers to the many-flowered spikes, reminiscent of a thick beard.

The genus Cymbopogon belongs to the tribe Andropogoneae in the subfamily within the family Poaceae Panicoideae.

Use

Many Cymbopogon species are to obtain the essential oils contained in them, especially citronellol and geraniol, used. Even use as spices and medicinal plants, as well as insect repellent is associated with essential oils. A well-known species in the genus is the lemon grass ( Cymbopogon citratus ). Citronella ( Cymbopogon winterianus ) has this very similar properties.
