Cynthia McLeod

Cynthia Henri McLeod ( born October 4, 1936 in Paramaribo, Suriname ) is a Surinamese writer.

Life

Cynthia was the daughter of the governor and first president of Suriname Johan Henri Eliza Ferrier and Eugenie Lionarons. A half sister is the Dutch politician Kathleen Gertrud Ferrier. She graduated in Suriname, the middle school and then went for further training as a child teacher in the Netherlands. Upon her return to Suriname and the Dutch studies, she taught from 1969 to 1978 Dutch at the secondary school in Paramaribo. Her husband Donald McLeod was appointed Ambassador of Suriname in Venezuela in 1978. This was followed by positions in Belgium and the United States. During this time she had the opportunity to visit various archives and documents available there on the colonial past to study. The acquired knowledge was a base for their later historical novels.

In 1987 her first novel was published, entitled Hoe duur what de suiker? ( How much was the sugar? ). The historical novel describes the time of the 18th century in Suriname, the time of the sugar plantations, with its European, Jewish planters and slavery. The first issue of the publisher Vaco in Paramaribo was sold out within a few months. This novel was also translated into German and published in 1996 under the title " Suriname ". The book is currently being entitled Hoe duur what de suiker filmed. The film premiere in September 2013

She wrote other historical novels about the period of the 19th century, and a study of Elisabeth Samson, a free-born in Suriname of the 18th century African- Surinamerin. This historical study it later processed into a novel. Your last published novel describes the period of military dictatorship in February 1980. In Suriname, Cynthia McLeod organized walking tours through the historic Paramaribo. It also has a boat that is Sweet Merodia, offered with the rides for tourists about the Suriname and the Commewijne to the old plantations. With the income they funded for schools the same tour to hereby to make the children a piece of Surinamese history perceptible.
